Dive log — Shearwater dive import for iPhone
Last updated: 18 October 2026
Dive log collects nothing unless you submit a dive site. There is no account, no server of ours, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting and no third-party code in the app. Nothing you log is ever sent to us; the only thing we receive is a dive site you choose to submit, described below.
What is stored, and where
Your dives (with the computer's own log for each), dive sites, locations, buddies, tags, notes, ratings, cylinders and settings. They are stored on your iPhone and, through Cloud sync, in the private iCloud database of your own Apple Account, so your other iPhones see the same log. That database belongs to your account: we cannot read it. Cloud sync follows your iPhone's iCloud settings; turn iCloud off for Dive log there and the log stays on this iPhone only.
What leaves your iPhone, and when
- Bluetooth. The app talks to your Shearwater dive computer only to download its dives. Nothing about you is sent to the computer.
- Place search and maps. When you type a place name for a dive's location, the text goes to Apple Maps for suggestions; maps and place names come from Apple. Apple's privacy policy covers those requests. Known dive sites are matched on the iPhone, from a list built into the app.
- Your location, only when you ask to pin a site where you are, and only while the app is open. The position is used once and kept only as the pin you choose.
- Photos. The app can save a dive card to your Photos when you choose Save. It never reads your library.
- Sharing. A dive card leaves the app only when you share it, to where you choose.
- Sites you submit. Only when you press Submit in Settings, under Submit personal sites, and only the sites you leave ticked: each site's name, its pin, the place you typed, how many dives you logged there and the deepest of them, when you submitted it and the app's version. Your notes, your dives and anything about you stay private. The sites go to the public database of Dive log's iCloud container, which Apple runs, where only you and we can read them; Apple attaches anonymous numbers for your account and device, which tell us two sites came from the same person and nothing about who you are. We review each site, and the ones we add become known sites for every diver, published under the Open Database Licence like the OpenStreetMap sites. To have a submitted site removed, write to us.
- The known sites. When you add or pick a site, at most once a day, the app downloads the list of sites we added from this website. Like any web page, the website sees your iPhone's internet address; nothing else is sent with the request.
Deleting it
Delete dives in the app, one or many at once; with Cloud sync on, they are deleted from your iCloud too. Deleting the app removes what is on the iPhone. What is in iCloud can be removed in iPhone Settings, under your Apple Account, iCloud, Manage Storage.
Children
Dive log is for certified divers and is not directed at children. It collects no personal information from anyone, of any age; a submitted site carries none.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version appears here with a new date.
