Time to Surface — technical dive planner
Last updated: 19 October 2026
Time to Surface collects nothing unless you submit a dive site. There is no account, no server of ours, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting and no third-party code in the app. Nothing you plan is ever sent to us; the only thing we receive is a dive site you choose to submit, described below.
What is stored, and where
Your divers and their SCR figures, your settings, the dive you last planned, your briefs, your own dive sites, your signed plans — the names of the team and the signatures they drew on your iPhone — and your brand: the logos, pictures, name, lines and colour you add. They are stored on your iPhone and, for everything but your settings and the dive you last planned, in the private iCloud database of your own Apple Account, so your other iPhones see the same ones. Your divers, your own sites and your brand are kept where every Diver.Today app on your Apple Account can read them, so a buddy added in one app is in the others; briefs, plans and signatures stay Time to Surface's. That database belongs to your account: we cannot read it. iCloud follows your iPhone's settings; turn iCloud off for Time to Surface there and everything stays on this iPhone only.
What leaves your iPhone, and when
- Place search and maps. When you type a place name for a dive site's location, the text goes to Apple Maps for suggestions; maps and place names come from Apple. Apple's privacy policy covers those requests. Known dive sites are matched on the iPhone, from a list built into the app.
- Your location, only when you ask for sites where you are, and only while the app is open. The position is used once and kept only as the pin you choose.
- Sharing. A plan or a brief leaves the app as a picture or a PDF only when you share it, to where you choose — with the names and signatures on it.
- Sites you submit. Only when you press Submit in Settings, under Submit personal sites, and only the sites you leave ticked: each site's name, its pin, the place you typed, when you submitted it and the app's version. Your plans and anything about you stay private. The sites go to the public database of Dive log's iCloud container, which Apple runs, where only you and we can read them; Apple attaches anonymous numbers for your account and device, which tell us two sites came from the same person and nothing about who you are. We review each site, and the ones we add become known sites for every diver, in Time to Surface and in Dive log, published under the Open Database Licence like the OpenStreetMap sites. To have a submitted site removed, write to us.
- The known sites. When you add or pick a site, at most once a day, the app downloads the list of sites we added from Dive log's website. Like any web page, the website sees your iPhone's internet address; nothing else is sent with the request.
- Purchases. The Diver.Today App Family subscription and the lifetime purchase are sold and billed by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details or your Apple Account; the app only asks Apple whether a purchase is active. Apple's signed record of your purchase is kept in your own iCloud, as above, so your other Diver.Today apps can honour it. Manage or cancel a subscription in iPhone Settings, under your Apple Account, Subscriptions.
Deleting it
Delete divers, briefs, plans, sites and logos in the app; they are deleted from your iCloud too. Deleting the app removes what is on the iPhone. What is in iCloud can be removed in iPhone Settings, under your Apple Account, iCloud, Manage Storage. A plan you shared is wherever you sent it.
Children
The app is a planning tool for certified technical divers and is not directed at children. It collects no personal information from anyone, of any age; a submitted site carries none.
Changes
